Health News – Survey

Every two years the Board of Trustees is required to consult with the parent community about the school’s Health Education Programmes.  The purpose of this consultation is to outline the programmes we are delivering, how we are delivering the Health Education Programmes and what we see as the health needs of our students. To provide your feedback, shares your ideas and suggestions, please click HERE to complete the online survey for parents.

Once the results of the parent, student and community consultation has been gathered and analysed a report will be made to the Board of Trustees and the results will be posted on the website and a summary sent out to parents via a newsletter.

Archbishop on a level playing field at SCC

Archbishop John Dew introduced Caritas’ Social Justice Week 2011 with a talk to students at St Catherine’s College recently.  He talked about the Social Justice Week theme ‘On a level playing field: fair play and the common good’ armed with a whistle and bundle of green, yellow and red cards. “It’s time to blow the whistle on inequality,” he said. “It might mean showing some people a red card if they promote policies and ways of living that mean some people are getting a lot more than others who are struggling.”

He congratulated the students from St Catherine’s and St Patrick’s on their recent success in regional kapahaka competition. “We are meant to use our talents, and to strive for excellence and for achievement. We expect competitions to be won fairly and squarely, on a ‘level playing field’ where all have a chance of success.”

However Archbishop Dew noted that in society there are a lot of inequalities. He said many New Zealanders do not experience our society as a level playing field.  “It would be great if New Zealanders put as much enthusiasm and effort into ensuring we have a fair society, as we do into cheering for success on the sporting field”.

Biology at the Zoo

On Friday 16th of September, the Level 3 Biology class visited Wellington Zoo to check out the primates!

It was a beautiful day to be walking around investigating the differences between new-world monkeys, old-world monkeys, apes and other primates such as lemurs.  After checking out the similarities between the chimpanzees and us humans (and believe me, there were more than I would have imagined!) we visited the Learning Room where Zoo educators, Ben and Lynn used a live hedgehog, several skulls and skeletons and an interactive whiteboard to take us through a brief guide to Human Evolution.

It was really interesting, we learnt a lot and we had to think!  Learning outside the classroom was really interactive.

From the Geography Department

Yr 13 Samoa Trip

Yr 13 Samoa Trip

After 6 months of frantic fundraising, the Year 13 Geography class set off for sunny Samoa from 8 to 13 July.  Eighteen students and two staff boarded the plane and after arriving at 3am we struggled onto our lovely little bus provided by the Archbishop.  We were lucky to be able to stay in the village of Fagalii with the parents of one of our students.  They have built a large house to rent out to tourists and we were the first visitors.  They cooked us feasts and along with other girls’ relatives, looked after us so well. Our focus was the “effects of tourism on people and places in Samoa”.  We interviewed providers and organisations and went to visit tourist attractions. We swam in the warm ocean and walked the canopy crossing in the rainforest, about 10 metres above the ground.  We had 2 nights on Savaii at Tanu beach in simple fale only 5 metres from the sea.  Our last night was at Aggie Grey’s resort so we were able to compare the three types of tourist accommodation.

After hearing the news of Nicole Lemon’s dad’s passing, we held a liturgy for him at sunset on the beach.  We farewelled Nicole who went home two days early and we were all very saddened by her loss. We had a wonderful time, engaged in valuable learning opportunities and escaped from Wellington’s winter.  Thanks to everybody who supported us.

Huge congratulations to the Senior A Netball Team (Justys Vickers, Eleni Lotovale, Jaymee Graham, Petala Elama, Alisi Aukafolau, Matalega Faatau, Joana Nysse, Alli Vauea, Melinita Kaufusi and Rosanna Williams) who competed in the Lower North Island Secondary School Netball Championships in Wellington this week. The girls finished 10th out of 25 teams – a huge improvement on last year’s result. The girls won 6 of their 9 games and showed determination and wonderful team spirit. Coach, Ms Gould, is very proud of the team’s outstanding performance and is looking forward to next year already!
