The Physical Education department philosophy is to present students with a challenging, stimulating, positive and enjoyable environment in which to learn new skills. Skills will be taught to cover all areas of Hauora; mental, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Through different teaching methods and teaching areas these four aspects will give the students a holistic learning experience. The aim is for all students to leave with a positive attitude towards physical activity no matter what physical ability they have. It is hoped that the positive experiences they will have here will encourage them to pursue a fit and active lifestyle out of, and after school. Physical Education is offered at every level of the school from Year 9 through to Year 13.
Physical Education is compulsory for Junior students and they participate in Physical Education for two lessons each week. During their two years they will have taken part in:
- Adventure Based Learning and Team Building
- Aquatic activities
- Athletics
- Badminton
- Basketball
- Dance
- Fitness Training
- Football
- Gymnastics
- Hockey
- Netball
- Striking and Fielding Games
- Ultimate Frisbee
- Volleyball
Physical Education is compulsory in Year 11 and they participate in Physical Education for two lessons a week. Throughout the year the students work towards gaining 18 NCEA credits which can be used for their Level 1 certificate. Students will participate in a range of activities during the year such as:
- Biathlon
- Dance
- Handball
- Ultimate Frisbee
- Volleyball
- Yoga
They will also learn about; interpersonal skills, performance improvement, self-management skills and factors that affect participation.
