Music is a fundamental form of expression, both personal and cultural.

Music is offered right through from Year 9 to Year 13. Music is an NCEA accredited subject. Students can also gain university entrance through studying Music.
Courses on offer are:
- Year 9 Core Music (all Year 9 students will take this for one term)
- Year 9 Option Music (this course runs for two terms)
- Year 10 Option Music (a full year course)
- Year 11 Option Music (based on NCEA Level 1 Music)
- Year 12 Option Music (based on NCEA Level 2 Music)
- Year 13 Option Music (based on NCEA Level 3 Music)
Through studying Music students learn to:
- compose
- perform as a soloist
- perform as part of an ensemble
- develop aural skills
- develop theoretical knowledge
- develop knowledge of Music history
- understand and appreciate music of many different styles and from many different cultures
- develop knowledge of computer and sound technology
Extra-curricular music activities are open to all students at St Catherine’s College. Students who study Music as an option subject are especially encouraged to participate in an extra-curricular activity to enhance their musicianship and ensemble skills.
Ensembles on offer include:
- Jazz Band
- Barbershop Chorus
- Barbershop Quartet (by invitation)
- Belles Voix (auditioned choir)
- Concert Band
Students are also able to contribute to music for masses and liturgies at the College.
Students who take Music as an option subject are also required to learn an instrument. Students are able to take lessons through the College.
Instruments on offer include:
- Clarinet
- Flute
- Guitar
- Piano
- Saxophone
- Violin
- Voice
The College is able to hire out clarinets, flutes, saxophones (alto and tenor) and violins to students.
