Mathematics

“the exploration and use of patterns and relationships in quantities, space, and time.” – The New Zealand Curriculum

Mathematics is a compulsory subject from Year 9 to Year 11. From Year 12-13 it becomes optional where students are able to take a Statistical or Calculus direction with their learning.

Courses:

  • Year 9-10 Core Mathematics
The main topics include: Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics.
  • Year 11 Core Mathematics (NCEA Level 1)
This course extends the content that was introduced in
    Years 9 and 10.
  • Year 12 Option Mathematics (NCEA Level 2)
The main topics include: Algebra, Non-Linear Graphs, Co-ordinate Geometry, Calculus (differentiation and integration) and Statistics & Probability.
  • Year 13 Option Mathematics with Calculus and/or Statistics & Modelling
    (NCEA Level 3)

Statistics – The main topics include: Modelling (regression, time series data and bi-variate data), Probability (distributions & confidence intervals).

Calculus – The main topics include: Differentiation, Integration, Algebra & Complex Numbers, Trigonometric Functions.

Extra Curricular Activities

There are a variety of extra-curricular activities available. Students are encouraged to participate to broaden their mathematical knowledge and represent St. Catherine’s College.

  • Australian Mathematics Competition
  • Mathswell Competition

Mathematics

Recently students have been exploring how mathematics can be found outside of the classroom, in daily life. Below are some tasks which the students participated in:

Mathematical Prayer
9BG girls recently incorporated mathematics into their everyday prayers. Have a look below at what they came up with.

“Dear Lord, we thank you for the angular world we live in. Thank you for numbers and shapes, and the way that we may use mathematics in our everyday lives. Dear Lord, we pray that we may understand and improve on our mathematical skills and so it becomes easier to add, subtract, divide and multiply. Thank you Lord. In our Father’s name, Amen.” – Tabatha

Angles in Action
10BG girls recently discovered that they are surrounded by mathematics, even when they are in the playground.
