Year 11 Geography Trip

On Friday 11^th of May, St Catherine’s College Year 11 Geography students went to the Wairarapa to look at “sustainability” of dairy farming.

The students said it was a successful trip, being exposed to a lot of what they had been learning in class. All were pleased they to had gumboots to wear because of the unexpected wet conditions. A highlight of the trip being Ms Willis buying the students hot chips and Ms Lorenzen coming along with her son to help translate for the overseas exchange Japanese students.

Tabitha Billington – Quiz Master

A group of devoted ‘One Direction’ fans put together a quiz to test the knowledge of the other ‘Directioners’ in the school community. Tabitha Billington and Clare Lewis were the quiz masters and very efficiently ran the quiz which filled the library with teams of hopeful fans. Carrots and posters were the prizes (why carrots? because Louis a band member likes carrots). The quiz was a great success on a cold lunchtime. Rebecca Wilson won the quick fire final round.

Author Visit

New Zealand author, Joanna Orwin

The New Zealand author Joanna Orwin came and talked to a group of year 10,11,12 students about her new book ‘Sacrifice’ and the process of writing fiction. ‘Sacrifice’ is a finalist in the 2012 New Zealand Post Book Awards. She talked about writing and was impressed by how many of our students were engaged in writing pieces of work in addition to their school assignments. A couple of students talked about their fan-fiction work which has been posted on the internet which was interesting.

Winning Title at Cross Country Relays

On Wednesday the 9th of May we had two teams in the annual schools Cross Country Relay Championships. With the welcome return of Jean Kozyniak coming back from foot surgery, and in her first year as a senior girl we had to enter our best team in the senior grade. Josie Kozyniak and Laureen Duggan (still in the intermediate age group) were having their first race in a long time as they had both been doing a lot of swimming lately and our fourth runner was a promising year 9, Alex Langley. Sophie Burns, Ngiste and Birtukan made up a year 9 team but could only run the first 3 legs, nonetheless enjoyed the experience. So on a rainy afternoon, with a scratch team with three girls running in a higher grade and lots of questions to be answered. Had Jean recovered? how was Josie’s and Laureen’s running fitness? finally, could Alex handle the pressure?

The girls answered in the affirmative. Josie ran the first leg and carried the team into fourth place (fifth fastest time in senior girls that day). Laureen ran strongly to bring us up to third (tenth fastest time in seniors). Alex held the teams position (27th fastest time in senior’s and still a year 9) and Jean ran superbly (second fastest time) to scorch past St Mary’s and Wanganui Collegiate to give us a win by 30 seconds.

Congratulations girls a really gutsy effort and a Wellington title!
